Town ‘N Country…Tampa’s First Suburb
History and Current Developments
Until the 1950s, the area now known as Town ‘N Country area was pretty much one big cattle ranch, supplying beef and dairy products to a burgeoning Florida population.
But all that changed in 1958, when the LaMonte-Shimberg Corporation bought a 525-acre dairy farm from the D. Wayne Webb Family, and began development of the Town ‘N Country Park subdivision near the intersection of Hillsborough Avenue and Memorial Highway.
By the time they were done in 1978, LaMonte-Shimberg had built (and sold!) more than 8,000 single-family homes and townhouses in Town ‘N Country, and others were doing the same.
The term “Town ‘N Country” today describes a much larger portion of Hillsborough County than originally envisioned, bordered by Pinellas County/Oldsmar on the west, Tampa Bay to the south, Tampa International Airport on the east, and Linebaugh Avenue to the north.
The entire Upper Tampa Bay area has grown significantly over the last four decades adding upscale residential communities as well as expanding business opportunities in nearly all sectors – retail, service, and manufacturing. Town ‘N Country remains an oasis of primarily single family homes in attractive, tree shaded neighborhoods. There are numerous home owner associations and many civic organizations that provide a robust base for community pride and action.
The Town ‘n Country area incorporates about 40 square miles and is home to about 120,000 residents. Median family income approximates $40,000 with nearly a third of the labor force engaged in sales or office work and about 25% holding professional/managerial positions. The area is stable with nearly 45% of the residents in their homes greater than five years. The area is multi-ethnic with the Hispanic/Latino population showing the most growth currently comprising 35% of the population base, approximately 50% of the area is comprised of White (non-Hispanic) and the remaining population primarily Black and Asian.
Today the residents and area businesses are working hard with the Hillsborough County government on a very rosy future for the area. The Upper Tampa Bay Chamber is a proud participant in this effort. The major catalyst behind this renaissance has been the Town ‘N Country Alliance – an alliance of home owners, associations, civic organizations and businesses – that worked diligently with county planners to produce an award winning Community Plan. This plan has ten major objectives to improve the community and control the growth as the community matures. This plan includes:
Development of a Town Center including a new $15 million library and Gardens area Improve appearance of area roadways Improved transportation options including sidewalks, bicycle lanes and connectivity with area nature trails Increased code enforcement and signage codes to reduce clutter Strengthen and empower community and business associations There is ongoing action on virtually every plan element. We think you will find that Town ‘N Country offers a wide variety of great opportunities for family living, business and great access to all that the Tampa Bay area has to offer.
